三姨 (3rd auntie) I drew this portrait of my dear aunt in 2016 when she was in hospital. I watched as Alzheimers was rapidly taking over her, her memories, her ability to have conversations. I wanted to draw her portrait, because I wanted to capture her familiar simplicity. A face hardened by life. Always content. But unfortunately by this time her eyes already lacked her usual sparkle. Instead, just a distant gaze of emptiness.

“Dad” 1 x 0.7m Acrylics and Ink 2018 Happy to see dad on holiday, enjoying his retirement by exploring the world. He used to share many stories of travels and scouting adventures before marriage. He would take us for short driving trips mostly to Malaysia... Thats all seemed to stop when I was in my late teens... I cannot recall when the last trip was. This painting from photo is a little cheeky... nothing really special about a tuk tuk but a sight to dad. Painted slightly big headed and greyed..as though one was looking down at him... my little resentment toward the state of how my family turned out.
“Mum and I” 0.7 x 0.4m Acrylic 2016 There is a saying “have kids to guard your old age”. I have made a conscious decision to live away from my parents. Visiting a few times a year. Mum has not prepared for old age on her own, having been a home maker most of her life. Even though she is well taken care of her daily needs, there is always something more she yearns. This was painted from photo. I wanted to portray mum the fair delicate, almost a victim...whilst I the distant son (in shadow) just fulfilling the role of a dutiful son... just.

Goodbye 3姨 Sea burial 2 Acrylic and Ink March 2019 My third auntie passed away. This is a portrait from photo of her only daughter on a boat as the monk was performing final rites for the sea burial. A very dutiful daughter, providing for all my auntie’s needs to the end. This was part of 3 paintings I did to remember the “send off” (to the other world) a farewell to my beloved auntie. In the end we only have the memories.
